Faith in Action, a program of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation,
is a nationwide network of interfaith volunteers caregiving programs.
These programs bring together volunteer of many faiths to help people
who have long-term health conditions or disabilities to enhance their
quality of life by providing companionship and assistance with daily
activities. http://www.fiavolunteers.org
Faith in Action Evanston is an extraordinary program which offers
much needed support to at-risk neighbors in the Greater Evanston
area. Trained volunteers help elderly, disabled, frail, and chronically
ill neighbors remain independent and in their own homes by providing
help with activities such as shopping, medical appointments, companionship,
and household chores.
As national spokesperson, Touched by an Angel's Della Reese is leading an effort to spread the word about Faith in Action. Along with her efforts, Faith in Action is telling the country about a national study, which found that:
- More than one quarter of Americans over age 55, approximately 16 million people, struggle with daily activities as simple as shopping, cooking and housework.
- Nearly one half of those who have difficulty do not receive any help from family or others.
- Older Americans prefer receiving assistance from faith-based organizations over secular organizations (47 percent vs. 19 percent).
Faith in Action volunteers come from churches, synagogues
and other houses of worship, as well as the community at large.
With this volunteer assistance, members of the community who have
long-term health needs can maintain their independence for as long
as possible.
